In its updated FAQ, VTech said:

In total 4,854,209 customer (parent) accounts and 6,368,509 related kid profiles worldwide are affected, which includes approximately 1.2 million Kid Connect parent accounts. In addition, there are 235,708 parent and 227,705 kids accounts in PlanetVTech. Kid profiles unlike account profiles only include name, gender and birthdate.

The main thing to note here is the number of European countries affected. That hit to EU customers could result in an inquiry into VTech.

It's not clear where the servers storing the data were located. Given the impact on France, the UK, and Germany -- three European nation states, where data protection and privacy laws are some of the strictest in the world -- no doubt the EU will investigate.

For its part, VTech noted that "regretfully our database was not as secure as it should have been."
