Qatar National Bank hacked; 1.4GB file archive leaked online
Reports indicate that Qatar's National Bank (QNB) has been hit with a cyberattack which has exposed roughly 1.4GB of corporate data.
According to Cryptome, it is not known how the financial institution's data was leaked, and it could be anything from simple human error to an outside cyberattacker or inside job.
Whatever the cause, a 1.4GB file cache has now entered the public realm and is available for download, reportedly containing sensitive corporate data and client financial information.
Founded in 1964, the Doha-based financial institution is the biggest bank in the country.
The company said in a statement that it will not speculate on the alleged data breach, but wanted to assure customers that "there is no financial impact on our clients or the bank."
While little is known about this alleged data breach at the moment, QNB may simply be the latest in a long line of financial institutions which have been targeted for the valuable financial and personal information stored within.
The last major bank to become a victim of a cyberattack was Bangladesh's central bank, which was the target of a heist which left the bank almost $1 billion poorer. Cybercriminals managed to compromise the organization's servers, steal credentials and make a number of rapid transactions.
