NASA has released impressive images and video footage of our planet in 4K high definition.

If you're lucky enough to own a 4K resolution monitor or television, it is well worth checking out NASA's latest release to the public -- an impressive showreel of ultra high definition footage and imagery of our planet Earth.

The footage was provided by the International Space Station, which at the time of writing is zooming across South Africa at 17141 mph with an altitude of 257 miles (you can keep track of the ISS' progress in real-time with this tracker).

The collection, posted on YouTube, is still worth viewing whether or not you have a high-definition screen, but there is something incredibly impressive with this level of detail of the astronauts' observations of Earth.

The International Space Station provides the platform for both payloads and experiments which support projects including climate research, weather predictions, natural disaster monitoring and pollution tracking.
